Texas Dyslexia Services offers an exciting new perspective on Dyslexia. The Davis Dyslexia Correction® Program has been successful because it is geared to the way a dyslexic person processes information. The program is outlined in the book, 'The Gift of Dyslexia', by Ronald D. Davis, the program founder. We use the term outlined because all facilitators are trained in additional methods that go beyond the book.

The purpose of this program is to empower children and adults who experience difficulties with reading, writing, math, language and attention. Clients gain a new understanding of their personal thought process, perceptual process and learn self-help methods for controlling perception and for eliminating confusion.

The Davis Dyslexia Correction® Program is based on the findings that many individuals who exhibit learning disability symptoms have a natural and innate ability to shift or alter their mental and physical perceptions. They can use this perceptual ability to facilitate creativity, improve physical performance, enhance thinking and resolve confusion. However, when they unconsciously attempt to use this same ability to resolve confusion regarding language/math symbols, it can cause unwanted perceptual distortions that can affect vision, hearing, balance, motor skills, time sense and attentiveness.

Individuals who possess this thinking style can be shown how to control their perceptions, so that disorientation will not interfere with their ability to learn. During the program, clients gain the experience using these skills as they begin to clear up basic confusion regarding language symbols. They also learn special techniques designed to their way of learning and perceiving.

When using the tools learned from the Davis Dyslexia Correction® program, a client is able to unlock their learning potential, as well as enhance the effectiveness of other forms of assistance they may desire.

Many people ask the question, "What is Dyslexia exactly?" That question has baffled many individuals, parents, educators, doctors, psychologists, etc. We believe dyslexia is non-verbal conceptualization processing. They are simply picture thinkers as opposed to word/sound thinkers (verbal conceptualization processing). This is not to say that all dyslexics think in pictures all of the time or that all non-dyslexics think in words/sounds all of the time. But, rather, we all have a primary mode of thinking which comes naturally to all of us. Verbal thought follows the structure of our language, it is sequential and occurs at about the same speed as speech. Non-verbal thought is innovative, the picture grows as the thought process adds more concepts, it is not sequential in nature. Thus, it is faster than the speed of speech.

Dyslexia is a gift. They are visual, intuitive, creative, multi-dimensional thinkers with extraordinary talents because they are dyslexic. They should never be made to feel less than a non-dyslexic because they have the ability to function in both realms. Because of their gifts, it can be difficult for them to understand letters, numbers, words and symbols. People often have the misconception that dyslexia is limited to the reversal of letters. Dyslexia is an innovative way of thinking and being.

Our world has reaped the rewards of many dyslexic people who have paved the way for us. Alexander Graham Bell brought us the luxury of the telephone, Thomas Edison made our lives brighter and if it were not for Mr. Hewlett, we would not enjoy the convenience computers have made in our lives.
